Intent
At Western Primary School, we recognise that physical activity and sport are essential parts of a child’s everyday life and are a key factor in their future well-being. We aspire for all children to find enjoyment in physical activity by providing all children with a wide range of opportunities so they have the autonomy to discover the right kind of activity for themselves and experience what benefits that an active lifestyle can provide.
We want to teach children skills to keep them safe, such as being able to swim. We provide a high-quality, engaging PE curriculum that builds fundamental movement skills, promotes physical fitness, and fosters positive attitudes towards healthy lifestyles, this means children can be exposed to opportunities to compete against themselves and others, work in teams, build self-confidence and perseverance. We can achieve this through a skills focused curriculum with differentiated lessons delivered by skilled teachers. This results in confident students who can actively participate in sports both inside and outside of school following the disciplines and values which PE promotes.
Implementation

- All children are t participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities.

This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.
- Children in Year 4 have the opportunity to swim once a week for a 10-week block.
Impact
At Western we help to motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. All children should be able to discuss the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how this is achieved as well as developed skills that underpin life such as teamwork, sportsmanship, self-motivation, resilience and independence.
