Intent
Mathematics is an essential part of everyday life. The aim of Mathematics at Western Primary, is for children to develop confidence, enjoyment and competence so that they can foster a lifelong love of learning in mathematics. We want our children to make sense of the world around them by developing their ability to calculate; recognise and understand relationships and patterns and reason and solve problems. We expect mathematics to be utilised as a tool beyond the daily mathematics lessons and beyond the classroom.
The curriculum focuses on building the skills of fluency, reasoning and problem solving through the CPA approach (Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract), and allows children to explore skills and knowledge in depth. Vocabulary is a core focus and will be developed and extended throughout every lesson to enable success. We want children to become independent problem solvers who show competence in solving sophisticated problems. Our children should take risks in their learning and challenge themselves. We strive to develop their ability to make rich connections within the mathematics programme of study, the whole school curriculum and the wider world. We aim to provide opportunities for our more able mathematicians to be stretched appropriately and offer a platform of support for children who are working below age related expectation to make accelerated progress, ensuring that basic numeracy skills are not overlooked. We endeavour to develop an enthusiastic, creative and resilient attitude towards mathematics that will stay with our children throughout their lives.
Implementation
At Western Primary, the foundation of learning and progression is built around the National Curriculum for Mathematics and the White Rose Scheme as a resource to support our teaching. The progression maps are structured using the topic headings as they appear in the National Curriculum:
- Number and Place Value
- Addition and Subtraction
- Multiplication and Division
- Fractions (including decimals and percentages)
- Ratio and Proportion
- Measurement
- Geometry - properties of shapes
- Geometry - position and direction
- Statistics
- Algebra
We follow a structured progression of knowledge and skills from FS2 to Year 6 through our carefully developed long term plans. We strategically map out the key concepts and skills that pupils need to master at each stage, ensuring a logical and sequential progression.
We also use ideas and resources from a range of other providers such as: Grammarsaurus, Twinkl, Numberfun and Nrich to give children opportunities to deepen their knowledge and understanding. We plan small steps of learning, often pre-teaching knowledge and skills before the lesson content and ensuring that all children have the opportunity to succeed.
Impact
The impact of our mathematics provision can be seen in the following ways:
- In the learning produced in children’s exercise books.
- Their learning is clearly evident on the walls of their classrooms and other learning environments.
- Children demonstrate a quick recall of facts and procedures. This includes the recollection of the times table.
- Children show confidence in believing that they will achieve and resilience when problems are encountered.
- Each child achieves objectives (expected standard) for year group.
- Disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs thrive in mathematics, benefiting from targeted support and interventions designed to meet their specific needs.
- The flexibility and fluidity to move between different contexts and representations of maths.
- The chance to develop the ability to recognise relationships and make connections in maths lessons.
- Mathematical concepts or skills are mastered when a child can show it in multiple ways, using the mathematical language to explain their ideas, and can independently apply the concept to new problems in unfamiliar situations.
- Children display a positive attitude towards mathematics, with a growing curiosity and sense of enjoyment. They are motivated to problem-solve, persevere, and engage in mathematical discussions.
- Children’s mathematical reasoning, fluency, and problem-solving skills are well-developed, enabling them to meet the demands of further study and future careers.
- Children transition to secondary education with a solid foundation in mathematics, prepared for the challenges that lay ahead.
