At Western Primary School  our intent is  that Geography will  help to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world.  Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, its interconnectedness and their place in it. The geography curriculum at Western Primary School  enables  children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which can and are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills.

The curriculum is designed to ensure that teaching equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress through the school, their growing knowledge about the world helps them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge and skills are progressive and are sequenced to provide the framework and approaches that provide explanation of how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives, equipping them well for further education and beyond.

As a result of our intent and implementation, we can demonstrate a significant impact on the knowledge, understanding, and skills of our pupils in geography.

Our  ambitious curriculum ensures that our pupils make excellent progress in their geographical knowledge and skills throughout their primary school journey. They will  develop a secure understanding of key geographical concepts and can apply them to real-world examples confidently. Assessment data and pupil outcomes consistently reflect exceptional levels of attainment across the geography curriculum.

The enthusiasm and engagement of our pupils in geography will be evident through their active involvement in lessons, fieldwork, and discussions. Our pupils will  develop a genuine love for exploring the world around them and feel motivated to investigate and inquire further. They demonstrate a sense of enjoyment and curiosity in their geographical learning experiences.

Through our geography curriculum, our pupils will develop a deep appreciation of cultural diversity, promoting a respectful and inclusive attitude towards different cultures and traditions. They gain a sense of global citizenship, understanding their role in shaping a sustainable and interconnected world. Our pupils demonstrate empathy, environmental responsibility, and an awareness of social and economic inequalities both locally and globally.
