Key Stage 1
Reading
In Year 1 reading is taught through the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds core programme. As children develop in proficiency, they transition to the Little Wandle Fluency programme in Year 2. Reading is also built into our English teaching units as part of the journey of writing. High quality texts, videos and images are used as a stimulus for reading comprehension. Children discuss and share ideas verbally and develop the ability to provide written responses to their reading.

Writing
We use carefully chosen texts and multimedia resources as a stimulus for writing.In Key Stage 1. Children build on their early writing skills to become more confident and independent writers. They learn to plan, compose, and edit sentences, using a growing vocabulary and a range of punctuation. Through exposure to different text types—such as stories, instructions, poems, and reports—they develop an understanding of purpose, structure, and audience. Spelling, grammar, and handwriting are taught explicitly and embedded in writing activities, supporting accuracy and fluency. As they move through Year 1 and Year 2, children begin to write longer pieces with greater detail and organisation, laying the foundations for successful writing in Key Stage 2.
