Intent

At Western Primary we aim for pupils to recognise the significance of technology in their everyday lives and the importance of online safety. Our curriculum is progressive allowing pupils to build upon their knowledge, whatever their starting point, to enable them to develop to their full potential and aim to be the best they can be. Our aim is to provide pupils with the knowledge and skills to become confident, curious and creative users of information and communication technology and for our pupils to be able to transfer their skills in the future. Our curriculum will also be adaptive to future technology and changes.

At Western Primary we aim for our pupils to understand and be able to apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation and be able to evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems. As online safety is a very real concept in our lives, we aim to teach our pupils the skills and knowledge to stay safe on line and enable them to use it responsibly and respectfully both in school and in the real world.

Implementation

Our curriculum covers the National Curriculum for Computing and is tailored to meet the needs of our pupils using the Twinkl Digital Sparks computing scheme. 

Each lesson contains recp of prior learning, analysis and problem solving. This helps pupils to build on their prior knowledge as well as introduce new skills.

The knowledge pupils need to acquire has been organised around key concepts which are revisited as pupils’ progress through key stage 1 and 2.

Impact

The impact of our Computing curriculum will be seen within formative and summative assessments. Children use technology confidently in a responsible and respectful way. They will be able to apply their knowledge and skills in their everyday lives, from the classroom to the wider community that they are part of.

Children will be aware of online safety, how to stay safe and what to do and how to report any problems they might encounter. Children will be confident in using this knowledge should the need arise. They will be able to take this knowledge with them as their learning journey continues beyond Western Primary.

By the time, pupils leave Western primary they will:

  • Be able to use technology confidently and purposefully.
  • Know and be able to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully.
  • See the digital world as part of their world, extending beyond school.
  • Be able to transfer skills safely and confidently in their future lives.

Be able to lead happy and healthy digital lives in and out of school and in their future lives.
