Religious Education

Intent

Western Primary School is an urban school for children in the age range 4 to 11. We work to the Lincolnshire Locally Agreed Syllabus in religious education (RE). At Western Primary School we recognise the core place that RE occupies as part of a broad and balanced curriculum area in which our pupils can encounter and critically reflect on a range of worldviews.

At Western Primary School, we actively seek to prepare our pupils for life in modern Britain by providing a high-quality RE curriculum that is inclusive, develops knowledge, respect, and empathy towards various religious and non-religious beliefs, fostering an atmosphere of tolerance and community cohesion. Our RE curriculum promotes key British values, including respect, individual liberty and tolerance.

Using Jigsaw scheme of work at Western Primary School, our intent is to adopt an enquiry- based approach as recommended by Ofsted, beginning with the children’s own life experience, before moving into learning about and from religion. We recognise and respect the variety of religious and non-religious backgrounds that make up our school community. We encourage pupils to explore their own beliefs (religious or non-religious), as they examine issues of religious belief and faith and how these enable pupils to build their sense of identity and belonging, which helps them flourish within their communities and as citizens in a diverse society. We challenge racism and all forms of prejudice.

Our curriculum provides pupils with the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to fulfil their potential, by provoking challenging questions about the meaning and purpose of life, beliefs and issues of right and wrong, commitment and belonging. It develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Christianity, other principal religions, fostering personal reflection, spiritual development and a sense of awe, wonder and mystery.

Implementation

Our curriculum covers the Lincolnshire Locally Agreed Syllabus for RE and is tailored to meet the needs of our pupils using the Jigsaw RE scheme. We use a two-year cycle, enabling children to recall and build upon previous learning.

We follow the recommended minimum curriculum time, which is set out in the Dearing Review (1996):

KS1: 36 hours per year

KS2: 45 hours per year

For RE in Early Years, provision should allow children the opportunity for exploration of the world and respond to children’s natural curiosity about things around them.

Our RE curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced to ensure a coherent and progressive learning journey for all pupils. We follow the Lincolnshire locally agreed syllabus, which includes statutory requirements and covers a wide range of religious traditions and worldviews. The curriculum is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect changes in society and ensure relevance to our pupils.

  • In order to create an inclusive environment, we foster an atmosphere of respect and positive dialogue where pupils feel safe and comfortable discussing religious beliefs and values. We actively promote understanding and respect for diverse religious and non-religious perspectives, ensuring that the curriculum is accessible to all pupils, regardless of their background or faith.

Our curriculum promotes the acquisition of essential knowledge and understanding of religious and non-religious beliefs, practices, and texts. We provide opportunities for pupils to explore key themes and concepts across different religions, encouraging critical thinking and reflection. Pupils also develop an understanding of how religion influences the lives of individuals and communities.

RE is integrated into the wider ethos and values of our school. We aim to cultivate an environment that promotes mutual respect, tolerance, and acceptance of all individuals, irrespective of their religious or non-religious beliefs. We actively promote opportunities for pupils to engage in activities that demonstrate the positive impact of religious values on society, fostering a sense of community and social responsibility.

Each lesson contains revision, key vocabulary and reflection. This helps pupils to build on their prior knowledge as well as introduce new knowledge.

The knowledge pupils need to acquire has been organised around key concepts which are revisited as pupils’ progress through foundation stage, key stage 1 and key stage 2.

  • Christianity
  • Hinduism (Santana Dharma)
  • Islamism
  • Other religions – Varies according to the Action Plan
  • These concepts are throughout the following threads that are important to our pupils at Western Primary School

  • Community
  • World Beliefs

Impact

The impact of our RE curriculum can be seen within our summative and formative assessments. Pupil outcomes demonstrate a deep understanding, a strong sense of respect, tolerance and appreciation towards diverse religious and non-religious beliefs and cultures. Children are able to make connections between different faiths and their own lives through engaging learning experiences. Pupils engage in thoughtful contemplation, exploring existential questions and their own beliefs. They develop a spiritual awareness and an understanding of the roles that religion and belief systems play in shaping identity, values and ethics

RE plays a significant role in promoting community cohesion within our school. Pupils participate in lessons which demonstrate the importance of mutual respect and cooperation in building a harmonious and inclusive society. They demonstrate appreciation for the similarities and differences among individuals and are able to engage in respectful dialogue, which contributes positively to building cohesive communities, in line with British Values.

By the time children leave Western Primary School, our outstanding RE provision will help to develop knowledge and understanding to responsible individuals who respect and celebrate diversity. It achieves this by promoting inclusive practice, and contributing to the children’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development.
