Intent
At Western Primary School, we provide children with the knowledge and skills to develop and express their individual creativity, as well as develop a positive attitude towards their art work. Children are encouraged to think critically and develop an understanding of different elements of art. Our high quality art curriculum engages, challenges and inspires children throughout their educational journey. Children have the opportunities to develop their ability in drawing, painting, collage, sculpture and learning from others. We explore different art forms from a range of historical periods, by learning about a selection of artists, craft makers, designers and architects.
Implementation
This is achieved through clear knowledge overviews and art planning, which also states the skills and knowledge that the children need to learn. Whole school overviews also support with how art knowledge and skills are progressed from EYFS to KS2. Planning includes differentiated support, key questions and words, as well as any possible misconceptions that can arise during lessons. At the start of every art lesson, previously learnt knowledge is recapped, alongside a retrieval of the previous lessons work. At the end of the lesson, children are asked to recall key knowledge that they have learnt.
Where possible, the children’s art work is linked to the current topic being taught and this changes every term. The specific thread of drawing, painting, collage and sculpture changes through every topic to ensure full coverage. Children use different materials, equipment and resources to develop creativity and the exposure of different media.
Children use their sketch books to experiment using different techniques and afterwards are encouraged to evaluate their work. Throughout all of this, our art lessons celebrate effort, progress and achievement thus making the children proud of what they have produced.
All children are provided with a sketch book which stays with the child throughout their school journey. This allows teachers and children to see the progression through the years. Art is assessed using O Track, by breaking down the knowledge and skills that the children have learnt. This is assessed on a termly basis. Teachers set clear objectives and a success criteria every session, which is accessible to all children to achieve. There is an annual report given to parents every year which informs parents on how progress in the subject has been made and how well their child has achieved. This also informs children of any other improvements which need to be made.
