Reading Practice Sessions
Little Wandle reading practice sessions are structured, small-group lessons that take place three times a week. Each session focuses on a specific book that is carefully matched to the children’s current phonics knowledge. The first session develops decoding skills, the second builds fluency and expression, and the third enhances comprehension. After these sessions, children take the same book home to read with their family. Because they have already read it in school, it should be familiar and easy to read—helping to build confidence, fluency, enjoyment, and a sense of success.
Helping your child with reading at home
The best thing you can do to help your child with their reading is practise, practise, practise! The books given to your child are carefully matched to ensure children don’t come across sounds that they don’t know. They should be able to read these books easily! This is because we want children to enjoy reading, not struggle and develop their fluency.
At home take the opportunity to hear your child read and work on developing their fluency and flow by re-reading sections or pages. Practise using expression and character voices.

Reading for pleasure
Alongside your child’s decodable book, they will also bring home a ‘reading for pleasure’ book. This may or may not be a book that your child can read independently yet. This book is for you to read to/with your child. Use this opportunity to talk about the content of the book including the plot and any interesting vocabulary.
Any reading your child does at home can be written onto their reading record. This includes books from school or books from home. Any reading counts! Just record the title and the date. If you have any comments or questions about your child’s reading, get in touch with your child’s teacher via Class Dojo.
